11/4(Mon) International GIAHS Seminar 4
Appreciating the Hidden Values of the World Traditional Agricultural Systems as a Living Cultural Heritage
Guest Speaker: Dr. Parviz Koohafkan
President, World Heritage Foundation, Rome, Italy
Long-term and successful preservation of ecologically valuable traditional agricultural practices in danger of extinct is one of the greatest challenges among the GIAHS sites worldwide. In June 2011, Noto and Sado were designated as GIAHS for the first time in Japan. At the Fourth World Forum on GIAHS in May 2013, three additional sites were proclaimed in Japan making the total GIAHS sites from 11 countries into 25. Noto has gained interest within and outside Japan due to its long tradition in using its natural resources to conciliate sustainable use, and biodiversity conservation guided by the GIAHS concept, principles and applications.
The Satoyama Satoumi Project of KanazawaUniversity has invited our Guest Speaker, Dr. Parviz Koohafkan known to us as the “Father of GIAHS” to the fourth GIAHS Seminar series. In the first part of the seminar, Dr. Parviz gives us a lecture on the importance of traditional agricultural systems as a cultural heritage and rationale behind their management. The lecture will discusses the status of and trends in the world’s traditional agricultural systems and future prospects. The second part is composed of the talks by seven persons, including GIAHS conscious farmers with different styles of practices, coordinator for local communities and researchers on local economy and cultural study. The dialogue is envisioned to result in a deeper shared understanding the approaches and insights for a long-term reactivation and building of networks towards the sustainable development of Noto’s Satoyama Satoumi.
